Telephone/Computer Scam ALERT – Several residents of Lacey Township have recently been targeted in a scam involving their home telephones and personal computers. Multiple residents have reported being contacted on their home telephone by a person claiming to be a computer technician. The supposed “computer technician” is advising the victim(s) that they have a virus on their computer, and that if they pay a fee ranging from $199 – $399, the “technician” will clear the virus from their computers by accessing it from a remote location. The victims that have paid the fee with a personal credit card and allowed the suspect to access their computers, have experienced further fraudulent activity against their on-line bank accounts.
This is a scam is not new and has been the subject of prior police department public alerts. The Lacey Township Police Department is asking residents to be aware of these types of scams and to not give access to your computer or give out personal information to unknown sources. Anyone who has been victimized by this type of scam and has not yet reported it is asked to contact the Lacey Township Police Department at 609.693.6636.
